Africa (Commonwealth Union) _ The “japa syndrome” in Nigeria refers to the significant trend of professionals, especially doctors and nurses, leaving the country in search of better opportunities abroad. The term “japa” comes from the Yoruba language and means to run or escape. This outflow of skilled workers has become a cause for concern in Nigeria, as it contributes to a shortage of qualified medical professionals and other talented individuals within the country.
Over the past few years, thousands of doctors and nurses have emigrated to countries like the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and Gulf states. The lure of higher pay and improved working conditions overseas has driven this trend. The departure of medical professionals has left a strain on Nigeria’s healthcare system, with a small number of doctors left to cater to a growing population of around 220 million.
Efforts by the Nigerian government to address this issue have been met with challenges. Proposed measures to legally bind new doctors to stay in Nigeria for a certain period after qualifying were met with resistance and threats of strikes. Many professionals are determined to leave due to factors such as corruption, insecurity, economic instability, and poverty.
While the exodus of skilled workers poses challenges for Nigeria, it also brings economic benefits in the form of remittances. Nigerians working abroad sent back an estimated $20 billion in remittances in a single year, which is a substantial inflow of funds for the country.
The phenomenon known as the “japa syndrome” serves as a poignant illustration of the multifaceted issues confronting Nigeria. These challenges encompass brain drain, economic hardships, and social turbulence, which collectively have propelled numerous talented individuals to pursue improved prospects and living standards abroad.
