Global (Commonwealth Union) – Every year on April 17th, World Hemophilia Day is observed to raise awareness about hemophilia and other bleeding disorders. Hemophilia is a rare genetic bleeding disorder in which the blood does not clot properly. It is a lifelong condition that affects mainly males as males have a single x chromosome, although females can also be carriers of the disease. Hemophilia can cause internal bleeding, joint damage which is a frequent complication of the condition, and other complications that can be life-threatening if left untreated.

The World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH) started World Hemophilia Day in 1989, to honor the birthday of WFH founder Frank Schnabel. The theme of this year’s World Hemophilia Day is “Access for All: Prevention of bleeds as the global standard of care”.

It is estimated that more than 400,000 people worldwide have hemophilia, with a large proportion of those affected not receiving adequate treatment. In some countries, access to treatment is limited, and many people with hemophilia face significant challenges in accessing the care they need. World Hemophilia Day aims to raise awareness of the condition and improve access to treatment and care for those affected.

On World Hemophilia Day, events are held around the world to raise awareness of hemophilia and other bleeding disorders. These events may include educational sessions, blood drives, fundraising activities, and other activities aimed at promoting hemophilia awareness.

World Hemophilia Day is an important event that raises awareness of hemophilia and other bleeding disorders and aims to improve access to treatment and care for those affected. The WFH and other organizations work tirelessly to support people with bleeding disorders and to promote healthcare initiatives that can help improve the lives of those affected. Through continued awareness and advocacy efforts, we can help ensure that people with hemophilia and other bleeding disorders receive the care they need and deserve.
