World Parkinson’s Day

-

Health & Medicine, (Commonwealth Union) – World Parkinson’s Day is observed on April 11th every year to raise awareness about Parkinson’s disease, a degenerative disorder that affects the nervous system. It is a day to recognize the challenges faced by those living with the disease and to honor those who have lost their battle.

Parkinson’s disease is a neurological disorder that affects movement. It is caused by a loss of dopamine-producing cells in the brain, leading to tremors, stiffness, and difficulty with balance and coordination. Parkinson’s disease affects over 10 million people worldwide, and with an increasing aging population the rates are likely to rise further.

The first World Parkinson’s Day was observed in 1997, on the 100th anniversary of the discovery of Parkinson’s disease by Dr. James Parkinson. The day aims to increase awareness and understanding of the disease, promote research into its causes and treatments, and support those living with Parkinson’s and their families.

World Parkinson’s Day is an opportunity to educate the public about the disease and to encourage people to get involved in fundraising and advocacy efforts. Many organizations around the world hold events and activities to mark the day, including walks, runs, and other fundraising events. These events help to raise money for research and support programs for people with Parkinson’s disease.

The theme for World Parkinson’s Day 2021 is “Hope in Parkinson’s,” emphasizing the importance of staying positive and optimistic in the face of a challenging disease. Despite the many difficulties faced by those with Parkinson’s, there are many reasons for hope. Advances in research and treatments are helping to improve the lives of people with Parkinson’s, and many organizations are working to raise awareness and support those living with the disease. In recent many advances in research has shed more light on the condition that could possibly improve treatments for the condition.

This World Parkinson’s Day, we can all make a difference by getting involved in the fight against Parkinson’s disease. We can donate to organizations that support research and advocacy efforts, participate in fundraising events, and help to spread awareness about the condition.
