Yara India Sets New Industry Standard for Sustainability with…?

-

(Commonwealth) _ Yara India, a subsidiary of Yara International and a leading crop nutrition company has achieved a remarkable milestone in sustainable manufacturing with the successful revamp of its Babrala manufacturing unit in Uttar Pradesh. The company’s dedicated efforts to enhance efficiency and sustainability have resulted in a record-breaking overhaul completed within just 35 days. The Babrala unit now stands as one of the most sustainable urea manufacturing facilities in India, setting a new industry standard and exemplifying Yara’s commitment to sustainability within its global network.

The firm has been steadfast in its quest of improving efficiency and sustainability ever since Yara purchased the Babrala facility from Tata Chemicals in 2018. Through diligent efforts, it has achieved an impressive reduction in Specific Energy Consumption, lowering it from 5.18 GCal/MT Urea to an outstanding 4.95 GCal/MT Urea. This significant decrease corresponds to a 5% reduction in emissions, resulting in an annual decrease of approximately 70,000 TCO2e. The Babrala unit’s accomplishment in energy efficiency, specific water consumption, effluent generation, and greenhouse gas emission reduction showcases Yara’s commitment to sustainable manufacturing practices.

In line with its commitment to sustainable land management, this unit has undertaken extensive water conservation projects both within and beyond its premises. The plant has implemented advanced Membrane BioReactor (MBR) technology sewage treatment plants (STPs) to replace the old STPs, enabling the utilization of treated sewage effluent for high-end applications such as cooling water makeup. This innovative approach ensures efficient water usage and minimizes the strain on freshwater resources.

Additionally, the unit has invested in infrastructure for rainwater harvesting, with a potential capacity of 128,000 KL. This initiative not only helps replenish groundwater resources but also reduces reliance on external water sources. Their efforts in water conservation showcase their dedication to sustainable practices and responsible water management.

Sanjiv Kanwar, the Managing Director of Yara South Asia, emphasizes the unit’s commitment to health, safety, environment, and quality. Yara India’s Babrala unit places utmost importance on the well-being of its employees, adhering to stringent safety protocols and providing a secure working environment. The company’s dedication to health and safety reflects its commitment to responsible operations and its employees’ welfare.

Beyond its core operations, the Babrala unit actively engages in community development initiatives across various sectors. It has played a pivotal role in healthcare, education, agriculture, animal husbandry, women’s empowerment, skill development, and infrastructure enhancement. The company’s infrastructure projects include the construction of channels for 33 tube wells to ensure access to water resources and the provision of safe drinking water through reverse osmosis (RO) plants. Additionally, it has worked to improve cattle sheds, benefiting the local agricultural community, and has provided seating for students in government schools, enhancing educational opportunities for young learners.

Yara India’s commitment to community development and its collaboration with local stakeholders and suppliers exemplifies its dedication to driving economic growth while fostering sustainable development. By creating employment opportunities and supporting local initiatives, it demonstrates its role as a responsible corporate citizen and a catalyst for positive change in the region.

An important step toward more sustainable manufacturing techniques has been made with Yara India’s successful renovation of the Babrala production facility. Through its commitment to efficiency, innovative technologies, water conservation, and community development, it has set a new industry standard for sustainability within the urea manufacturing sector. The Babrala unit’s impressive reduction in Specific Energy Consumption and greenhouse gas emissions showcases its dedication to environmental stewardship.

Moreover, Yara India’s efforts in water conservation, including the adoption of advanced sewage treatment technology and rainwater harvesting infrastructure, demonstrate the company’s commitment to responsible water management. By prioritizing health, safety, and community development, actively contributes to the well-being and growth of the local community.

Inspiring others to embrace environmentally friendly manufacturing techniques, Yara India acts as a role model for the sector as it continues to promote sustainable practices and work with stakeholders. Through its achievements at the Babrala unit, Yara India establishes itself as a leader in sustainability, contributing to a greener and more prosperous future for India and beyond.
