Yashoda Hospitals gives a fresh lease of life to the young Ugandan footballer through L-VAD

Hyderabad, India (CU)_ At Yashoda Hospitals based in Hyderabad, India, the Department of Cardiology, Cardiothoracic and Heart-Lung mechanical assist devices team successfully implanted the newest JARVIK post auricular (behind the ear) driveline to the 31-year-old young Ugandan patient. Mr. Okwara Joseph is a professional footballer. In April 2021, he suffered chest trouble while playing football in Uganda.

Following the chest pain, he was diagnosed with coronary artery disease and severe Left Ventricular dysfunction, and was admitted to hospital in Uganda on many occasions with complaints of dyspnea, swelling of both lower limbs, and abdominal distension. He was subsequently diagnosed with ischemic cardiomyopathy and traveled to India in November for advanced treatment. On December 13th, he was taken to Yashoda Hospitals for severe heart failure symptoms.

A multidisciplinary team of physicians from the Departments of Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Heart and Lung mechanical assist device extensively reviewed the patient and decided that a left ventricular assist device would be the best destination therapy.
