Australian conservationist Bindi Irwin has remembered her father, Steve Irwin, on the 20th anniversary of his death. She shared an emotional tribute to the wildlife star, who became famous around the world as the “Crocodile Hunter”.

Steve Irwin died on 4 September 2006. He was 44 years old. A stingray struck him in the chest while he was filming an underwater documentary near the Great Barrier Reef. His sudden death shocked millions of people.

Bindi was only eight years old when she lost her father. On Friday, she described Steve as her “superhero” in a post on Instagram. She said her family had spent the past 20 years dealing with his loss while also watching people around the world remember him.

Bindi said she once believed her father’s greatest legacy would be his work to protect wildlife. However, she now sees it differently. She said his true legacy was love. That included love for nature, animals and other people.

Bindi also spoke about how Steve’s death affected her family. Her mother, Terri, lost her husband. Bindi and her younger brother Robert lost their father. She said grief never completely disappears. Instead, people learn to live alongside it.

Bindi also shared how Steve remains part of the life of her young daughter. Her five-year-old daughter watches his wildlife documentaries regularly. Bindi said the child feels a strong connection to her grandfather, even though they never had the chance to meet.

After Steve’s death, his family continued his work at Australia Zoo in Queensland. The Irwins have remained closely involved in wildlife conservation and have helped keep his message alive.

Bindi said her father’s influence continues to reach new generations. She described his life and achievements as something that should be remembered and celebrated. She also thanked Steve for being a “guardian angel” to their family. She concluded her tribute by expressing her deep love for him.

Terri Irwin also remembered her late husband. She shared an old interview in which Steve spoke excitedly about the birth of Bindi. Steve said becoming a father was one of the most amazing experiences of his life. He explained that Bindi’s name came from one of his favourite crocodiles. Robert Irwin also paid tribute to his father. He shared a childhood photograph of Steve holding him as a baby. He wrote that his father’s legacy would last forever. The Irwin family continues to honour Steve’s passion for wildlife, conservation and family.
