Sri Lanka (Commonwealth Union)_ Sri Lanka commemorated its 77th National Independence Day on February 4, 2025, with a grand ceremony held at the historic Independence Square in Colombo. This year’s celebrations, under the theme “Nawa Punaruda Yugayaka Arabuma” (Let’s Join the National Renaissance), were led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who took office recently. This marked his first Independence Day as the head of state. The event was attended by a distinguished gathering, including the Prime Minister, religious leaders, diplomats, military officers, ministers, civil dignitaries, and invitees. The theme of the 77th Independence Day, “Towards National Renaissance”, captured the nation’s aspirations for a renewed political, economic, and social landscape. The government’s commitment to sustainable development, equity, and national unity resonated throughout the proceedings, where cultural performances and speeches underlined the importance of collective progress.

The day began with a solemn yet dignified ceremony, as President Dissanayake arrived at the venue to commence the celebrations. Key figures, such as the Prime Minister, Speaker of Parliament, Chief Justice, military commanders, and others, had already gathered in anticipation of the President’s arrival. He was warmly welcomed by the Prime Minister and escorted to the flagpole by the top military commanders and the Acting Inspector General of Police. In a moment of national pride, President Dissanayake hoisted the Sri Lankan national flag, accompanied by a rendition of the National Anthem sung by a choir of school children. The young voices reverberated with patriotism, evoking the nation’s deep cultural heritage. This powerful moment was followed by blessings recited through the ‘Jayamangala Gatha’ and ‘Devo Vassatu Kalena,’ chanted by a group of school girls. A two-minute silence was observed to honor those who sacrificed their lives for Sri Lanka’s territorial integrity, including war heroes and patriots.
Following the flag-hoisting ceremony, the President was presented with a Tri-Services Guard of Honour, which further emphasized the nation’s respect for its military discipline and valor. This was followed by the President’s address to the nation, in which he reflected on Sri Lanka’s journey since independence and the challenges faced by the country. He highlighted the need for unity and resilience to overcome economic and social hardships, acknowledging the difficult period during the financial crisis of 2022, which saw Sri Lanka’s bankruptcy. “Independence is not merely a date on the calendar but a continuous struggle towards economic, social, and cultural freedom. We must stand together, as one nation, to rebuild and shape a prosperous future for our children,” President Dissanayake stated, emphasizing the importance of collective effort and national cohesion.

The military parade, an essential component of the ceremony, showcased the discipline of Sri Lanka’s armed forces. It included personnel from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Sri Lanka Police, the Special Task Force (STF), the Civil Security Department, and members of the National Cadet Corps. The parade also featured retired and serving physically disabled war heroes, saluting the President in a show of unwavering national pride. The parade was commanded by Major General A.H.L.G. Amarapala, the Commandant of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force. In addition to the formalities, the event featured vibrant cultural performances, with troupes showcasing traditional Sri Lankan dances that celebrated the island’s rich and diverse cultural heritage. The closing of the event was marked by a heartfelt rendition of the National Anthem in Tamil by children from various ethnic backgrounds, symbolizing the unity of the multi-ethnic nation.
As Sri Lanka celebrated its 77th year of independence, global leaders and nations extended their congratulations, affirming their commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties with the island nation. Accordingly, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio conveyed greetings, highlighting the enduring partnership between Sri Lanka and the United States, grounded in shared democratic values and a commitment to expanding trade, investment, and security cooperation. India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, also extended warm greetings, reiterating India’s dedication to deepening multifaceted cooperation with Sri Lanka. Additionally, the People’s Republic of China expressed its congratulations through Foreign Minister Wang Yi, reinforcing China’s commitment to enhancing bilateral relations across various sectors.
Several other nations, including France, Belgium, and Cuba, also sent their best wishes to Sri Lanka, marking a strong and enduring relationship with the country. This international support underscores the importance of Sri Lanka’s diplomatic presence on the global stage. President Dissanayake’s leadership has brought a fresh perspective to Sri Lanka’s Independence Day celebrations. His vision for the nation’s economic revival, social progress, and national unity was a central theme of the event, reflecting the aspirations of the people for a brighter and more prosperous future.
