Global (Commonwealth Union) _ U. S. President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire agreement coordinated between Israel and Iran late Monday. The announcement follows a series of tense military exchanges involving the three nations, including Israel’s attack on Iranian nuclear and military sites last week and the US’s attack on Iran’s nuclear sites on Sunday.
The ceasefire is arranged to be phased over the next 24 hours and promptly follows Iran’s attack targeting a key American military base, the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.
According to US officials, the base that was located just outside of Doha was the only American infrastructure that had been targeted, with only one of the 19 missiles launched striking it. There have reportedly been no casualties or significant According to statements by the Qatar Ministry of Defence, most of the missiles fired by Iran had been intercepted by their air defence systems. The ministry also credited the attentiveness of their armed forces in preventing major injuries or damage.
Trump released a statement on Truth Social regarding the incident, stating that “NO Americans were harmed, and hardly any damage was done.” The president also expressed hope that no more retaliatory attacks would take place, emphasizing the importance of avoiding hostility.
Trump has dubbed it the “12 Day War,” but the two conflicting countries have not publicly acknowledged the ceasefire. Nevertheless, Trump’s statement on Truth Social suggests a potential de-escalation following a period of intense exchanges.
Meanwhile, Qatar has condemned the targeted attack on the US air base carried out within its borders, highlighting its commitment to maintaining regional stability. Majed al-Ansari, the spokesperson for the Qatar Ministry of Foreign Affairs, addressed the attack, calling it a “flagrant violation” of Qatari sovereignty and international law. But he also said that the evacuation measures and anti-missile systems used ensured the safety of US and Qatari troops.
Qatar had also addressed the conflict earlier this week, stating concerns regarding the threat to peace posed by the US’s attacks on Iranian Nuclear Facilities. Basim Alawadi, a government spokesperson reiterated that the escalation poses “serious risks to regional stability”.
