Google Cloud’s Growing Footprint and Recent Initiatives in New Zealand
Google Cloud has seen a significant rise in adoption among New Zealand organizations, especially for its wide range of AI solutions. A notable example is the Auckland Council’s recent trial of ‘Ask Auckland Council,’ an AI assistant created on Google Cloud AI platforms in partnership with Deloitte. Auckland residents can now access council information more quickly across various digital channels thanks to this innovative tool.
To further demonstrate its commitment to the region, Google Cloud signed an All-of-Government Cloud Framework Agreement with the New Zealand Government in 2023. This agreement helps modernize systems and develop secure digital applications for eligible government agencies, simplifying their digital transformation efforts.
In terms of regional infrastructure investment, Google Cloud recently launched the Pacific Connect Initiative. This ambitious project involves deploying two transpacific subsea cables, Honomoana and Tabua, to improve the reliability and resilience of digital connectivity across the Pacific. The Honomoana system will establish a new connection to Auckland and create new points of presence in Melbourne and Sydney, greatly enhancing regional connectivity.
Before joining Google Cloud, Mr. Dacombe-Bird held several key leadership roles within New Zealand’s technology industry.
