Fuel Crisis Could Disrupt South Africa’s Citrus Exports This Season

South African citrus farmers are starting to worry about fuel problems just as the export season is about to begin in April. In some areas of South Africa, farmers have reported diesel shortages. The government has said that fuel supply across the country should remain steady for now. Officials believe there will not be a major shortage in the near future. However, people in the industry say the situation on the ground feels different. They have noticed that some fuel stations have limited diesel.

This may be due to unusual buying patterns or controlled distribution by suppliers. The timing is important because this period is when citrus exports begin to increase. South Africa is one of the largest exporters of citrus fruit in the world. In 2025, the country exported a record amount of citrus, reaching over 3 million metric tonnes. This was a strong increase compared to the previous year.

A large share of these exports goes to international markets around the world. The Middle East is a key export destination. It takes a large share of shipments each year. Europe is the top market. It receives the largest portion of goods because demand is high. Transport is crucial in this industry. Products need to be moved quickly and safely over long distances.

Trucks transport the majority of citrus fruit from farms to ports. Around 95% of exports rely on road transport. This makes the supply chain very sensitive to fuel issues. Any fuel shortage or price increase can quickly cause problems. Farmers are concerned about rising fuel prices in early April. Higher fuel costs can reduce their profits. It also adds more pressure on the industry. To address these issues, farming groups have introduced some solutions. One solution is to remove fuel taxes for farmers for a short time. This could lower costs, reduce financial stress, and help producers manage during this difficult period.
