The Maldives presidential race 2028 heats up as Abdulla Shahid steps in: Can his MDP bid change the 2028 race?

Maldives (Commonwealth Union)_ Abdulla Shahid’s decision to seek the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) presidential nomination could significantly reshape the Maldives’ 2028 presidential race. His entry adds another experienced figure to an already competitive contest and gives MDP members a choice between different styles of leadership and political experience. Shahid, a former foreign minister and former president of the United Nations General Assembly, has begun promoting his campaign by calling for a stronger and more united MDP. His message is focused largely on economic recovery, foreign investment and closer links with regional trading partners. He has also argued for greater cooperation with international financial institutions as the country faces continuing economic pressures.

Shahid’s background gives him a different profile from the other major candidates. Shahid has spent decades in Maldivian politics, serving five terms in the People’s Majlis and becoming the first democratically elected Speaker under the 2008 Constitution. He served as foreign minister from 2007 to 2008 and again from 2018 to 2023. His election as president of the UN General Assembly in 2021 also gave him an international platform that few Maldivian politicians have matched. However, his international reputation alone will not guarantee success in the MDP primary. He must first convince party members that he can turn his experience into a credible domestic political programme.

Shahid enters a field that already includes former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and former Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail. Solih has considerable support within the party and was the MDP’s presidential candidate in both 2018 and 2023. Fayyaz, meanwhile, has received the public backing of former President Mohamed Nasheed, the current MDP chairperson. Former Vice President Faisal Naseem has also indicated interest. This makes the primary particularly important. The contest will not simply determine the MDP’s next leader; it will help define the opposition party’s strategy for the 2028 presidential election. For Shahid, the biggest opportunity may be his attempt to present himself as a unifying candidate.

Shahid has described himself as a leader willing to represent different political views within the party. That message could appeal to members who want the MDP to move beyond internal divisions and present a stronger challenge to the government. His economic agenda could also become a major point of debate. Shahid is proposing an aggressive approach to attracting investment, expanding regional trade and strengthening international financial cooperation. If he can persuade voters that these measures would produce jobs, stability and stronger economic growth, the platform could become an important advantage. The challenge, however, will be turning broad economic promises into policies that ordinary Maldivians can easily understand and support.

The MDP is expected to finalise the details of its primary in the months ahead, with the internal election likely to take place in 2027. Whoever wins will face President Mohamed Muizzu, or the candidate selected by the ruling side, along with potentially other contenders. Shahid’s candidacy therefore matters beyond the MDP leadership contest. If he succeeds in building a broad coalition inside the party, he could emerge as a serious contender for the presidency in 2028. If the primary instead deepens existing divisions, the MDP could enter the national election weakened. Much will depend on whether Shahid can transform his experience and international standing into a convincing domestic political campaign.
