The project aims to address priority needs identified by national government entities by providing Canadian technical assistance to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) member states, spanning a period of 4 years. The ultimate aim is to support Caribbean countries in their efforts to diversify & strengthen local economies. Also, in building strong & climate-resilient communities, besides reducing gender & economic inequalities. As such, the Canada-CARICOM Export Development Mechanism builds the capacity of local government organisations in the area of good governance. Project activities include (1) enhancing effectiveness, transparency, and accountability; (2) strengthening equity and sustainability in policies; (3) enhancing the digitalisation of government services and goods; and (4) managing and improving financial and human resources. The coronavirus (COVID-19) had a devastating impact on Caribbean economies. Many of them are highly dependent on tourism. The pandemic has heightened the need to diversify economies. This goal is besides improving government effectiveness in addressing socioeconomic inequalities & also alleviating poverty.
The predicted outcomes for this project may include (1) enhanced effectiveness, inclusive, accountable, environmentally responsive as well as gender-responsive institutions as well as organisations in official development aid-eligible CARICOM countries; (2) greater equitable delivery of goods & environmentally sensitive, besides gender-sensitive services by public institutions to their constituents in official development aid-eligible CARICOM countries; and (3) increased visibility of Canadian expertise besides leadership in the Caribbean region.
