Mumbai (Commonwealth Union)_ Indian art and culture made international headlines again when designer Rahul Mishra brought his latest couture collection, Devi: The Eternal Muse, to Paris Haute Couture Week. Mishra used one of the world’s largest fashion stages to showcase India’s rich artistic legacy, translating age-old cultural inspiration into contemporary couture and showing how Indian craftsmanship continues to influence the global fashion scene. The 2026/27 Autumn/Winter collection was inspired by the intricate stone carvings found in temples across southern India. But rather than simply copy designs from history, Mishra has reinterpreted them into modern pieces of art that can be worn. His creations reflected the idea of the divine feminine, blending mythology, history and fine craftsmanship into striking couture pieces.

The runway featured sculptural garments in shades of stone grey, ivory, black, beige and antique gold, giving the impression that ancient temple carvings had come to life. The illusion of carved stone was achieved by using detailed embroidery. The outfits were completed with skin-tone bodysuits that blended perfectly with the outfits to further enhance the artistic effect. Temple-inspired crowns, dramatic headpieces and jewellery integrated into the garments completed the visual storytelling. Mishra’s signature hand embroidery was taken to another level in this collection. Rich textures reminiscent of the beauty of historic temple sculptures were created using traditional Indian techniques such as zardozi and dabka embroidery along with pearls, crystals and beads. The skill and dedication of Indian artisans were reflected in each garment and showcased craftsmanship that has been handed down through the generations.

The collection was the result of collaborations with Indian and international artists. Traditional clay artisan Sumant Kumar designed ceremonial headpieces inspired by temple crowns, while Indian jewellery brand Tanishq contributed natural diamonds and temple-style jewellery. The collection’s artistic vision was elevated by sculptural headwear from celebrated British milliner Stephen Jones, who united disparate creative inspirations. The show also attracted international attention beyond the runway. American rapper Cardi B attended wearing a custom Rahul Mishra couture outfit, placing the spotlight firmly on Indian design before a global audience. Her appearance further strengthened the international appeal of Mishra’s work.

Speaking about the collection, Mishra described it as a form of “time travel,” explaining that it was inspired by sculptures created more than 2,000 years ago in southern India. With Devi: The Eternal Muse, he wanted to revive the ideas and the artistic spirit that formed those masterpieces. Following his debut in 2020, Rahul Mishra has showcased 14 consecutive collections at Paris Haute Couture Week until July 2026, thus becoming an exemplary representation of India’s art, culture, as well as traditional craftsmanship and proving the growing prominence of India in the global fashion industry.
