India (Commonwealth Union)_ A grand bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi, created in Puducherry (a former French colony in South India) by renowned Padma Shri sculptor Munusamy and his team, is set to find a new home in France. The full-size artwork, standing nine feet tall, is being prepared for installation in Montereau-Fault-Yonne as part of efforts to strengthen cultural ties between India and France. The project has been commissioned in connection with the 30th anniversary celebrations of the French South Indian Friendship Association.

Organizers say the statue will serve as a lasting symbol of peace, non-violence, and humanity, the values Gandhi championed throughout his life. The work on the statue is currently underway in Kanuvapet village near Villianur in Puducherry. Although the finished sculpture will be cast entirely in bronze, the initial model was carefully shaped using nearly 1,000 kilograms of clay. The massive prototype has been handcrafted with close attention to detail before the bronze casting process begins.

Sculptor Munusamy, who received the Padma Shri for his contributions to the field of sculpture, said the work is progressing according to schedule. He noted that the clay model has already been completed and that the bronze casting process is moving forward smoothly. Once finished, the statue will be transported to France by air. The total cost of creating and shipping the monument is estimated at around ₹21 lakh. Organizers are making extensive preparations to ensure the artwork reaches France safely and is ready for its formal unveiling.

The statue is expected to be inaugurated on October 2, Gandhi Jayanti, which marks the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The project is expected to catch the attention of the Indian and French communities, emphasizing the lasting friendship between the two countries. The initiative pays tribute to one of the most respected leaders in the world, as well as showcases the artistic skill of Puducherry’s artisans. By presenting this artwork to an international audience, the initiative highlights India’s rich cultural heritage and reiterates Gandhi’s timeless message of peace and harmony.
