USA (Commonwealth Union)_ Nathan Thomas has achieved something no man had managed in more than three centuries. At just 18 years and 346 days old, the Florida engineering instructor officially became the world’s youngest male professor, breaking a Guinness World Records milestone that had stood for 306 years. His achievement has drawn global attention, not only for his age but also for the extraordinary academic journey that brought him there. The previous record belonged to Scottish mathematician Colin Maclaurin, who became a professor at the age of 19. His record remained untouched for more than three centuries, making it one of the oldest milestones in academic history.

Thomas surpassed the record by taking up a teaching position at Miami Dade College before celebrating his 19th birthday. He also became 16 days younger than Alia Sabur, who has held the record for the world’s youngest female professor since 2008. Thomas’ path to this achievement began much earlier than most students. At the age of 10, he enrolled at Miami Dade College through a dual-enrolment programme while continuing his regular school education. Instead of following a traditional academic timeline, he advanced rapidly, moving to Florida International University at just 14 years old.

Over the next four years, Thomas completed both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering with honours. His academic success eventually brought him back to Miami Dade College, but this time not as a student. Thomas joined the faculty in August 2023, teaching the “C for Engineers” course to college students, many of whom were the same age as him. There was also an unusual age difference between him and many other professors in the college. But he admitted that once learning starts, age does not matter. He explained that helping students understand difficult concepts and supporting them in achieving their goals was his main focus. He believes determination matters far more than age inside the classroom.

Additionally, teaching engineering and programming requires explaining complex ideas clearly, something Thomas says he enjoys deeply. “The most rewarding aspect of my job is when I witness students experience that ‘aha’ moment for something that seemed impossible just moments before,” Thomas says. He attributes much of his early interest in mathematics to his family, especially his mother, who made even the most challenging subjects appear simple and accessible.
Born into an engineering family, he had a natural curiosity and love for problem-solving from a young age. But, Thomas’ goals go beyond engineering. He is also working towards a Juris Doctor degree at the University of Miami School of Law and plans to graduate in 2028 while still working as a teacher. Someday he plans to focus on intellectual property law where his engineering skills can be used to make a difference in the legal world safeguarding technological developments.
