MAPUTO, August 11, 2026 – The southern parts of Mozambique are gearing up for some drastic and unusual weather patterns due to an influx of cold and humid air which is sweeping across the region. Going by the statement released by the National Institute of Meteorology (INAM), heavy rainfall along with some drops in temperature is on the cards for the area.
The National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) issued a weather warning for Maputo, Gaza, and Inhambane. It predicts cold, humid air masses bringing rain, a sharp temperature drop, and strong gusty winds, which pose risks to transport and vulnerable housing.
The southern winter of Mozambique lasts from May to September and is usually characterized by cool and dry weather that is marked by clear skies. Coastal humidity can result from the warm Indian Ocean, but the claim that this area is filled with overcast clouds, wet roads, and dampness contradicts the fact that this season is characterized by stable, dry, and sunny weather.
The impact of climate changes in Maputo city, as the capital of the nation, could affect the routine of travel and outdoor activities in the city. At the same time, in the countryside, regular rain and strong wind can complicate the difficulties of the locals who rely primarily on weather-sensitive market conditions.
The warning also discusses the situation by focusing on the aspect of fast-changing atmospheric conditions which must be taken into account instead of determining the rate of risk based on the level of rainfall only. Wind has the potential of converting a simple rain session into a destructive phenomenon, especially with regards to trees and roofs, electrical systems, or unsecured buildings.
