India (Commonwealth Union)_ India and Russia have built a strong relationship in space over several decades, with cooperation that has continued to grow from the early years of India’s space program to its plans for human spaceflight. A recent message from Russian cosmonauts aboard the International Space Station offered a reminder of how closely the two countries remain connected in space exploration. As India prepares to mark its 80th Independence Day on August 15, three Russian cosmonauts sent greetings while holding the Indian tricolour.
They were also holding posters featuring Yuri Gagarin, India’s first astronaut Rakesh Sharma, and the Gaganyaan human spaceflight program. Their message highlighted space cooperation as an important part of the broader India-Russia ties. The relationship has deep roots. In 1975, the Soviet Union launched Aryabhata, India’s first satellite, marking an important early achievement in bilateral space cooperation. The partnership reached another historic point in 1984, when Rakesh Sharma became the first Indian citizen to travel into space aboard the Soviet Soyuz T-11 spacecraft.

Yuri Gagarin also played a symbolic role in strengthening the ties. The first human to travel into space, Gagarin visited India in 1961, at a time when relations between India and the Soviet Union were expanding. His visit became an enduring symbol of friendship between the two nations. Today, cooperation is entering a new phase through Gaganyaan, India’s program to send astronauts into space. Accordingly, Indian astronaut candidates have received training at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre in Russia, reflecting Moscow’s continuing role in India’s human-spaceflight ambitions. The cosmonauts also referred to a joint competition organized by Roscosmos, its Indian representative office and ISRO to celebrate the two countries’ space partnership.

Their Independence Day message carried both historical and contemporary significance. It showed how cooperation that began with satellite launches and a pioneering astronaut has developed into support for India’s next generation of space missions. The partnership is a recognition for India and underlines the importance of international cooperation as it extends its footprint beyond the Earth. For Russia it is a continuation of a long-standing relationship that continues to find new avenues of cooperation. The message ended with good wishes for India’s peace, prosperity and success in space, underscoring a friendship that has stood the test of generations and missions.
