South Africa is hosting the 46th Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, with President Cyril Ramaphosa leading a string of official regional engagements.
The official programme kicks off on Friday, 14 August 2026, with a public lecture by President Ramaphosa at the Westville Campus of the University of KwaZulu-Natal. The address, themed “Translating SADC Vision 2050 into Action: Pathways Toward Solidarity, Equality and Shared Prosperity”, is a platform for academic, civil society and regional stakeholders to discuss economic transformation, infrastructure development and regional integration across Southern Africa.
On Saturday 15 August 2026, diplomatic proceedings continue as President Ramaphosa chairs a virtual high-level meeting of the Global Leaders Network (GLN). The session is taking place in conjunction with the SADC Summit and will convene regional leaders and international observers to discuss the health of women, children and adolescents. It aims to respond to global shifts in health financing, enhance the allocation of resources for domestic health care and lower maternal and infant mortality in all SADC member states.
Delegation of SADC Heads of State and Government will gather at OR Tambo Square on Durban’s South Beach on Sunday, 16 August 2026, for a ceremonial wreath laying. The tribute honours liberation leader Oliver Reginald Tambo and highlights the shared history of anti-colonial struggles in Southern Africa. Later in the evening, President Ramaphosa hosts an official welcome dinner at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in readiness for the main summit deliberations.
The formal gathering ends on Monday, 17 August 2026, with President Ramaphosa chairing the 46th SADC Ordinary Summit. The theme “Resilient, sustainable and inclusive industrialisation thru infrastructure development, agricultural and critical minerals transformation in pursuit of a just world” will see regional leaders discussing critical mineral processing, agricultural security, infrastructure investments and peace-building strategies across SADC member states.
