The 30-Second Plunge: How Flight FZ1073 Survived a Cockpit Nightmare

DUBAI/TABUK/TEL AVIV, October 1, 2026 — The most terrifying moment on flydubai flight FZ1073 on Wednesday, September 30, happened not during take-off or landing, but in the most secure section of the plane: the cockpit.

The Boeing 737 MAX 8 that was travelling from Dubai International Airport to Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv witnessed an ugly fight between the pilots. According to Israeli authorities, who spoke to Reuters, a co-pilot stabbed Captain Smit Machchhar many times before trying to crash the aeroplane. Flydubai Airline confirmed that an incident took place on board; however, it warned that no explanation for such an act is available, thus no speculations should take place.

What followed was an extraordinary battle against both an attacker and gravity.

According to a report by Reuters, the aircraft fell approximately 14,000 feet—which is about 4,267 metres—in under 30 seconds. Although Machchhar was reported to have suffered serious injuries, he had blood all over his body, but he was able to push the button to open the door leading to the cockpit. The importance of that action has become apparent as the rest of the crew and the passengers could enter the cockpit, overpower the co-pilot and help with regaining control over the plane.

Moreover, the aviation incident had another intriguing episode. Two other Flydubai pilots on board helped regain control of the aircraft after the cockpit was seized. Instead of heading for Tel-Aviv, Flight FZ1073 took a turn and landed successfully at Tabuk Airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia. Flydubai subsequently ensured the safety of all passengers.

The Boeing 737 MAX 8, a modern narrow-body aircraft designed for short and medium-haul flights, is the commercial aeroplane in question. The records of the flights the plane made before the accident suggest it was the same aircraft.

Operating on the flight route between Dubai and Tel Aviv is a world-renowned aircraft operator, flydubai. At the centre of this disaster is Machchhar, an Indian citizen from Mumbai who worked for SpiceJet for more than eleven years before joining flydubai.

According to the reports issued by the Indian embassy in Saudi Arabia, following the emergency landing at the airport, the workings of the aircraft were promptly re-established, and it has been reported that Machchhar had undergone surgery after the accident.

The event emphasized a basic issue existing in aviation: that despite a large number of flight-control systems as well as other safety measures, a cockpit is still a place where people can operate flight management with the assistance of creative thinking even under very difficult circumstances. In this case, human ability to operate a cockpit door helped organise a rescue: flight crew, passengers and even other pilots managed to perform the intervention.

A total of 174 people on board FZ1073 survived the accident. The plane landed in Tel Aviv more than ten hours after the incident. The very fact that the crash was survived raises questions about safety and aviation security: how was it possible for cockpit confrontation personnel to lose so much altitude so quickly while at the same time regaining control over the aircraft?
