Why Did the U.S. Just Quietly Pull Every Single Bomber Out of RAF Fairford?

The United States has removed all of its bombers from RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire as British counter-terrorism officers continue to investigate a serious security incident near the military base.

A US Department official confirmed that the aircraft had returned to their usual bases in the United States. No official explanation was given for the decision.

The move came days after an incident on 27 September, when police were alerted to three vehicles considered suspicious near RAF Fairford. Five men were arrested in the early hours of the morning on suspicion of terrorism and explosives-related offences.

The men, all British citizens from London and aged between 23 and 25, were initially questioned over possible explosives offences. They were later investigated on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act. All five have since been released on bail while police continue their investigation.

A sixth man, a 25-year-old British-Iranian national, was later arrested in London on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act. He was also released on bail.

The arrests have attracted attention because RAF Fairford is an important base for US military operations. American aircraft have used the base for many years, and it has recently supported US military activity in the Middle East.

Reports have suggested that the bomber withdrawal could be linked to the September incident. British officials have not ruled out the possibility. US military officials reportedly made the decision and communicated it directly to British military authorities.

There have also been claims of possible Iranian involvement. Prime Minister Andy Burnham said there were strong indications that Iran may have played a role, although he did not provide details. Iran has denied any involvement.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also suggested that a foreign actor may have been involved. President Donald Trump questioned why the suspects were released on bail. The investigation is continuing.
