DOHA, Qatar, October 6, 2026 – Qatar is developing tourism to be a key element in its economic development, with 2.614 million visitors using the country’s land, air and maritime entry points in the first nine months of 2026. Qatar Tourism reported the numbers on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, which revealed not only the extent of Qatar’s tourism popularity but also the changes in the country’s tourist market.

September offered further evidence of Qatar’s resilience as the country welcomed 276,000 visitors in September 2026, which marks an increase of 1.1% from the 273,000 visitors in September 2025. Though the increase might not seem impressive, it indicates Qatar’s efforts in building its tourism sector in the wake of the huge international attention it received once again during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

One of the most notable aspects of the latest statistics is the origin of tourists. GCC countries accounted for 1.069 million tourists, or 40.9% of the total tourist traffic for the period from January to September. In second place are Asia and Oceania, which provided 548,000 visitors, or 21% of the total number of tourists in that time span. Europe sent 538,000 tourists, or 20.6% of the total. The Americas accounted for 190,000 visitors, or 7.3% of the total. Other Arab countries and other African countries contributed only 184,000 and 84,000 visitors, respectively.

The geographic structure is of particular interest. Qatar does not depend on neighbouring Gulf markets only; it turns out that 6 out of 10 visitors from January to September 2023 were from outside of the GCC.

However, the significant story may be coming later. Qatar Tourism aims to attract over 6 million tourists annually by 2030, while also seeking to increase the tourism sector’s contribution to the state’s economy and enhance visitor spending.

The latest figures thus represent both success and an obstacle for Qatar. With the average of around 291,000 visitors a month in the first nine months, the country has proved there is consistent demand for it. The important question that is arising is whether Qatar is going to turn this constant flow of tourists into a much bigger, year-round tourism ecosystem, as planned for the end of the decade.

Qatar may no longer be advertising itself for the world to find out about it; now it needs to find a way to make millions more people come to it.
