Sri Lanka (Commonwealth Union)_ Sri Lanka has emerged as one of the world’s fastest-improving tourism economies, despite years of economic difficulties, high inflation and a series of natural disasters. Accordingly, the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Travel and Tourism Development Index (TTDI) 2026 has ranked Sri Lanka 10th among the economies that made the biggest improvements between 2024 and 2026. Sri Lanka’s TTDI score increased by 4.3% during the two-year period. The island nation was ranked 10th among a group of mainly developing tourism markets that recorded strong progress, including Albania, Vietnam, Laos, Qatar, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Morocco, and Nepal. The improvement comes as Sri Lanka’s tourism industry continues its recovery from the pandemic and the economic crisis. In 2025, the country welcomed a record 2.36 million international visitors and earned about $3.2 billion from tourism.

Several factors appear to be supporting this recovery. One of Sri Lanka’s biggest advantages is the variety of experiences available within a relatively small area. Beaches, wildlife parks, mountains, forests, historic cities and cultural sites like Ramayana-related destinations allow visitors to experience different forms of tourism during a single trip. The country’s natural and cultural resources are particularly important. The WEF report identifies cultural resources, tourism infrastructure and services, and air connectivity as areas where tourism economies have made significant global gains. Sri Lanka benefits from a strong cultural heritage, including ancient cities, religious sites, traditional festivals, cuisine and crafts.

Price competitiveness has also played a role. The WEF notes that emerging tourism economies have improved their scores faster than the world’s leading tourism destinations, helped by competitive pricing and strong natural assets. For travellers facing higher costs in many parts of the world, Sri Lanka can remain an attractive destination. Improved connectivity and the return of international travel have further supported the sector. Hotels, restaurants, transport operators and other tourism businesses have also expanded their activity as visitor numbers recovered.

However, the latest figures do not mean Sri Lanka’s tourism journey is complete. The WEF warns that simply attracting more visitors is no longer enough. Tourism growth must be managed carefully to protect the environment, infrastructure and local communities. For Sri Lanka, the challenge now is to turn rapid recovery into sustainable growth. Its recent performance shows that the country’s tourism strength comes from the combination of nature, culture, history and relatively competitive costs. Protecting those assets while improving services and infrastructure is important to sustain the current momentum.
