New York, USA (CU)_ According to the New York Times, more than 200 employees and contractors at Google parent Alphabet Inc in the United States and Canada have formed a labor union. The elected leaders of the union shared the news about the new union in New York Times on Monday. According to the union leaders, the aim of the “Alphabet Workers Union” is to confirm that the employees get a fair wage for their job and work without fear of abuse, retaliation or discrimination.

Google engineers Parul Koul and Chewy Shaw wrote the following: “Our union will work to ensure that workers know what they’re working on, and can do their work at a fair wage, without fear of abuse, retaliation or discrimination”. According to its website, the “Alphabet Workers Union” will collect dues of 1% of total compensation from members. The collected funds will be used to cover paid organizers, events, legal support and wages for members in times of a labor strike.

Google was questioned by the US labor organization, who accused the company for unlawfully questioning a number of workers and terminating them for protesting the company’s policies and trying to organize a union. But Google replied that the company acted legally.

Director of people operations at Google, Kara Silverstein, explained the company’s labor rights on Monday. He said, “Our employees have protected labor rights that we support. But as we’ve always done, we’ll continue engaging directly with all our employees”.
