L&T bags large transmission line orders in Bangladesh

New Delhi, India (CU)_ The Indian multinational conglomerate Larsen and Toubro, popularly known as L&T, has joined the power map of Bangladesh and bagged large transmission line orders in Bangladesh. Following the other Indian companies including NTPC, DVC, Reliance and Adani, now Larsen and Toubro, which has its operations in 30 countries, also made its way to Bangladesh. L&T’s power transmission & distribution company will involve in designing, supplying, installing, testing and commissioning of additional high voltage transmission lines on turnkey basis to meet the power demand in the country.

The orders were classified into four categories namely significant, huge, large and super, with values ranging between Rs 1,000 crore and Rs 7,000 crore. As cross-border power connectivity has emerged as a bridge to the relationship between India and Bangladesh, India has already agreed investing $9 billion or more than Rs 65,700 crore in the power and energy sectors of Bangladesh.

In Meghanahat, near Dhaka, Reliance Power had already started a 750mw gas-based power project. Adani Power has signed a contract to supply 1,600 mw from its Jharkhand plant to Bangladesh. NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam has also signed agreement to supply electricity from Tripura and Nepal to Bangladesh. DVC has also began exporting 300 mw to Bangladesh.

Senior executive vice president (utilities) of L&T, T. Madhava Das, while explaining on the new projects said that many projects are underway including the construction of the first nuclear power plant in the country, and transmission projects would boost the cross-border electricity trade. He said, “The recent wins strengthen the leadership position of our business that caters to power transmission & distribution and renewables EPC projects in the region”.
