Malaysia, UAE plans to boost economic cooperation

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (CU)_ Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have decided to strengthen the bilateral and economic relations between the two countries and enrich greater cooperation, particularly to enhance economic opportunities, given that both the countries are concentrating on a solid and resilient economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement today saying that its Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein and Sheikh Abdullah Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the United Arab Emirates, conducted a fruitful and productive conference yesterday in Abu Dhabi, where both the ministers revealed their satisfaction towards the current status of bilateral relations between the two nations.

The statement said, “In this regard, the two ministers discussed important initiatives under four priority areas of cooperation in the post-pandemic era, namely trade and investments, agriculture and food security, health and diplomatic exchanges”. The ministry said that working visit gave a new boost to the close and fraternal relations between Malaysia and the UAE, highlighting that the UAE was one of the key trading partners of Malaysia. The entire trade between the two countries amounted to US$6.43 billion in 2019.

The UAE remains Malaysia’s largest exports destination and second largest import destination in the region of West Asia. The Ministry said that Malaysia’s strategic position in Southeast Asia acted as an entryway to the UAE to enter the market of Southeast Asia, which hosts more than 650 million citizens. The statement said that Hishammuddin returned to Malaysia today, and in accordance with the COVID guidelines set out by the Health Ministry, he will go through a compulsory quarantine.
