WASHINGTON (CU)_The wife of jailed Mexican drug kingpin Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán has been arrested at the Dulles International Airport outside Washington DC, on suspicion of drug trafficking.

Emma Coronel Aispuro, 31, has been charged with engaging in a conspiracy to distribute cocaine, heroin, marijuana and methamphetamine. Apart from the drug trafficking charges, she is also accused of conspiring to assist her husband’s escape from prison in Mexico in 2015.

63-year-old Guzmán was the head of what is said to be the biggest drug cartel in the US. During his trial in 2019, several shocking revelations about him were made. They included raping girls as young as 13 and carrying out cold-blooded murder of rivals and former cartel members.

Back in 2015, he escaped Mexico’s maximum-security Altiplano prison, with the assistance of his sons who bought a property near the prison and smuggled a GPS watch into the facility in order to enable diggers to locate him. He later escaped by riding a specially adapted small motorcycle through the tunnel.

Meanwhile, Court documents show that Aispuro had once again attempted to plan another prison escape for her husband before his extradition to the US in January 2017. According to the US Justice Department, she is due to appear in a federal court in DC via video conference.

In 2019, Aispuro attended nearly every day of Guzmán’s three-month trial, during which she not only listened to grim accounts of murder and rape, but also claims that her husband spied on her and his other mistresses.

Nevertheless, Aispuro denied these allegations saying her husband is not the person the victims attempt to portray him as. “I admire him as the human being that I met, and the one that I married,” she said.

Guzman is currently serving a life sentence in New York for drug trafficking and money laundering.
