Chennai, India (CU)_ Tamil actor Suriya Sivakumar’s film Soorarai Pottru has been chosen for the 24th Shanghai Film Festival. The Tamil film was directed by Sudha Kongara Prasad and co-produced by Rajsekar Pandian. The movie has been chosen under the Panorama Section of the film festival. The film’s co-producer Rajsekar Pandian took to Twitter to announce the happy news. He shared a banner of Soorarai Pottru on Twitter and wrote, “Happy that #SooraraiPottru #PraiseTheBrave enters Panorama Section of Shanghai International Film Festival 2021”. Other than the film’s banner, Rajsekar Pandian also posted screen captures of the list of films that have been selected for the Shanghai Film Festival.
Soorarai Pottru is the success story of GR Gopinath, the founder of Air Deccan, a low-cost airline. The cast of the movie include Suriya Sivakumar in the lead role co-starring Aparna Balamurali, Paresh Rawal, Mohan Babu, Kavitha Ranjini, and Urvashi. Following the closure of theaters due to the COVID-19 outbreak, Soorarai Pottru is the first Tamil film to be released on OTT platform Amazon Prime Video. Suriya, the film’s primary actor, produced the movie, and it was distributed on Amazon Prime Video in 2020.
The film was a talk of the town due to its IMDb rating of 9.1. It ranks third among the top 1000 films on IMDb. The Shawshank Redemption and The Godfather are the first two films on IMDb, both Hollywood classics. Soorarai Pottru was also nominated for the recent Oscar awards, chosen from a pool of 366 films for the Best Picture category. Later, it was removed from the list. Soorarai Pottru was one of ten Indian films nominated for the 78th Golden Globe Awards in the Best Foreign Film category. This year’s Shanghai International Film Festival is planned to run from June 11 to June 20.
