A single currency for West African states?

LAGOS (CU)_More than two decades ago, countries across the West African region initiated plans to launch a common currency for the member states. Here, the objective was to enabling the French-speaking region to abandon the CFA franc for the new currency Eco, as part of the process of gaining complete monetary and fiscal independence from France. Although the currency was initially set to be introduced in 2003, this was postponed several times, and was rescheduled to 2015, during a meeting of the Convergence Council of Ministers and Governors of West Africa in 2009, owing to the global economic crisis.
