Saskatchewan increases ICU beds due to Covid pressures

Ontario, Canada (CU)_ The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) is ready to handle an increased number of severely affected COVID-19 patients in the province. The province’s health administration aims to make 130 ICU beds accessible. According to the SHA’s press release, “The more transmissible delta variant has resulted in increasing pressures on Saskatchewan hospitals at a much faster rate than previous COVID surges, drastically increasing ICU occupancy and hospitalizations due to COVID in the last month”.

The SHA is focussing on increasing the number of intensive-care unit beds in the province to 130 from 79 in the coming weeks. COVID-19 patients are expected to occupy 80 of the beds in the near future, leaving 50 beds available for other essential patients. The SHA is also seeking to expand hospital capacity outside of the province’s ICUs, allowing for the treatment of an extra 255 COVID patients at any moment.
