Huge container ships ‘filled with Christmas goods’ waiting in South West waters

Three huge container ships believed to be packed with Christmas presents and decorations for British households have been spotted off the West Country’s coast. Logistics experts say there are long delays getting ships into container ports, caused mainly by the Covid pandemic. Does this mean that Christmas decor will be cancelled this year?

The problems have been exacerbated by the incident in March in which the container ship Ever Given ran aground and blocked the Suez Canal for six days, causing a global shipping backlog. Throughout the pandemic, the sheltered waters of Torbay hosted cruise ships from all over the world, becoming part of the local community and using their horns to take part in events from Remembrance Sunday to New Year’s Eve.

But as lockdown restrictions lifted, the cruise ships went back into service one by one to places like the Mediterranean and the Caribbean and now just P&O’s Arcadia remains in the bay, with Cunard’s Queen Victoria expected back in the next few days.
