(CU)_Since the first half of last year, millions of lives and livelihoods across the globe have been severely affected by the economic and social shocks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The global health crisis had a particularly bitter effect on developing nations like Nigeria, with travel restrictions, factory closures, and supply chain issues bringing to halt development efforts of many many years. Now, with many countries attempting to recover from one of the worst catastrophes in the history of mankind, the government of Nigeria is seeking the support of its nationals abroad, in the form of foreign investments, to get back on its feet.
Last week, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, participated in a US-Nigeria Investment Summit, which was held along the side-lines of the ongoing United Nations General Assembly. During his address, the central bank Governor called on the diaspora community to step in to assist these recovery efforts of their homeland.
“Why am I here? I am here to convince those of you in the United States that it is time for us to begin to look back home,” he said. Addressing the concerns of many foreign investors regarding access to credit facilities and other challenges linked to Nigeria, Emefiele said: “… you can come and start from somewhere because of the numerous opportunities.”
