A U-turn on immigration rules to avoid a Christmas without turkey

LONDON (CU)_On 31 January 2020, the United Kingdom formally left the European Union, following the signing of the Withdrawal Agreement by the heads of the European Commission and Council on 24 January. According to the post-Brexit immigration rules, citizens of the EU member states who newly arrive in Britain cannot work visa-free in the country as they did prior to UK’s withdrawal from the trade bloc.

These rules have triggered warnings from British businesses who insisted that they would prompt a driver shortage, leading to a Christmas without turkey or toys. Although Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Conservative government has been resisting these claims over the past few months, Number 10 was forced to revise their immigration rules last week, as a shortage of tens of thousands of truckers lead to several supply-chain problems, causing long lines at gas stations and leaving supermarket shelves empty.
