A U-turn on immigration rules to avoid a Christmas without turkey

 issue thousands of emergency visas to foreign truck drivers to address the “exceptional circumstances this year”, which include the COVID-19 pandemic and an aging workforce, in addition to an exodus of foreign workers following Brexit. 

Accordingly, the government said that by the end of this week 5,000 three-month visas will be issued for truck drivers and another 5,500 for poultry workers. Nevertheless, they reiterated that this is only a short term measure that it is crucial for British workers to be trained to take on driving jobs, while transportation companies must improve their allowances and working conditions.

“After a very difficult 18 months, I know how important this Christmas is for all of us, and that’s why we’re taking these steps at the earliest opportunity to ensure preparations remain on track,” Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said, adding that UK firms must also play their part to retain new drivers.
