CAIRNS, Queensland (CU)_Coral spawning, which occurs once a year, is an extraordinary event to witness, as  corals simultaneously reproduce. The process involves the release of tiny balls containing eggs and sperm into the water. They break open once they float to the surface, releasing the eggs and sperm which bump into each other and cross-fertilize. This year’s coral spawning on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef took place overnight Tuesday (23 Nov), as the world’s largest coral reef exploded into life, giving birth to billions of coral babies off the coast of Cairns.
