BRISBANE (CU)_A severe storm has battered Australia’s eastern city of Brisbane, leading to evacuations, school closures and power cuts. Heavy rains have caused record-high floods in the capital city of the state of Queensland, causing havoc across the country’s east coast.
Six casualties were reported from Queensland, while another man died in in northern New South Wales when his car was carried away by floodwaters. Meanwhile, rescue teams are conducting a search in an effort to locate a man in his 70s, who fell into the Brisbane River on Friday. More than 28,000 homes in Brisbane were without power across Queensland, while over 1,400 homes in Brisbane were reportedly at risk of flooding. Over a hundred schools have been forced to close on Monday.
The people who were killed in the flooding include a 34-year-old man who attempted to swim to safety as his car sank into floodwaters. State rescue services said they are receiving around 100 requests for help each hour over the recent days.
