Islamabad, Pakistan (CU)_ Asad Qaiser, National Assembly Speaker of Pakistan, has convened a session of the Lower House of Parliament in Islamabad on March 25 to consider a no-confidence resolution against Imran Khan in the wake of an internal revolt within his party Tehreek-i-Insaf, where several members of the National Assembly (MNAs) left the PTI and joined the opposition ranks.

On March 8, a no-confidence resolution was signed against Imran Khan’s administration by the Pakistan People Party (PPP) and Pakistan Democratic Movement’s (PDM) nine-member opposition alliance. According to media reports, the party has 155 members out of the 342-member National Assembly and the backing of 23 MPs from six different parties. It will require a minimum of 172 votes to survive the no-confidence vote. With 24 of its own MNAs protesting, PTI’s challenge of garnering necessary numbers has grown exponentially more difficult, or impossible.

Who will succeed Premier Khan as the next Prime Minister of Pakistan if he loses the No Confidence Vote? While Imran Khan is sure of weathering the storm, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has already nominated Shehbaz Sharif for the country’s next Prime Minister post. Maryam Nawaz, vice president of PML-N, stated on Monday that the Opposition would decide the next Prime Minister of Pakistan, but her party will propose Shehbaz Sharif to succeed Imran Khan.

According to reports, Maryam Nawaz was quoted as saying, “Imran Khan! Your game is over”. Additionally, she asserted that Imran Khan’s party had already disbanded. The vice president of PML-N added, “The PM is aware that no one will come to his rescue now that he has lost the game. Imran Khan believes there to be an international conspiracy against him, but he conspires against himself. Had he fulfilled his duty, there would be no reason to mobilize one million people”.

In the meantime, Khan has cautioned the opposition party that if he loses power, he would become more threatening to them. He has also planned for a demonstration in the capital on March 27 to show his support base. However, the final result will decide Imran’s political destiny.
