PORT MORESBY (CU)_Over the recent months, members of the British Royal Family have been travelling overseas and carrying out engagements to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, as Her Majesty is set to become the first British monarch ever to mark 70 years on the throne. Just a few weeks ago, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge set out on a week-long royal tour of the Caribbean, in celebration of the historic occasion with visits to Belize, Jamaica and the Bahamas. The couple returned to the UK in late-March, but the royal tours continue.

Princess Anne and her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence landed in Port Moresby, the capital city of Papua New Guinea, on Monday, following a weekend of engagements in Australia. They were greeted at the Jacksons International Airport by Prime Minister James Marape, with the Princess Royal being presented with a garland of flowers before she inspected a guard of honour. During their stay in the island nation, the royal couple is expected to visit the Bomana War Cemetery, the National Museum and Art Gallery, Adventure Park Papua New Guinea, the Bomana War Cemetery, Caritas Technical Secondary School and St John Ambulance. The princess will also open a National Cardiac Diagnostic Centre at Port Moresby General Hospital, as well as a Women’s Resource Centre at Vabukori, a coastal village in the South electorate of Port Moresby.

The couple’s two-day tour will be concluded with a dinner with PM Marape and representatives from business and charity groups. Their visit is one of many royal tours across Commonwealth nations scheduled for this year. In the UK, the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee will be celebrated through a four-day weekend in June, which will include a Service of Thanksgiving, a special Trooping of the Colour, a concert at Buckingham Palace and a series of street parties and picnics.
