Mysuru, India (CU)_ A 102-year-old patient successfully underwent a high-risk operation at Apollo Hospitals, Mysuru. The unique bipolar hip replacement operation was done on the centenarian patient  in order to repair the fractured neck of the left femur. Balakrishna Gowda T. N., Chief Orthopaedic Surgeon and Head, Institutes of Orthopaedics, Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysuru, executed the surgery on Srikantaiah N after he was admitted to the hospital with symptoms of discomfort in the left hip region following a fall at home.

According to the doctors, on diagnosis, it was discovered that his left proximal femur had a fracture (fractured neck of femur). Considering his old age and the risk of becoming immobile, the doctor opted to do a modular bipolar hip arthroplasty after consulting with the patient’s family. This procedure is similar to a complete hip replacement, however only half of the hip was replaced.

The goal of the treatment was to make the patient walk as soon as possible and prevent future difficulties. Srikantaiah’s left hip joint was replaced surgically after a comprehensive evaluation of all relevant factors. The operation took twenty minutes to complete. According to the press statement from the hospital, the patient was able to move within 24 hours of the surgery.

After his father’s operation, 75-year-old Nanjundaswamy expressed his delight that his father was walking again in less than four days. Dr. Gowda explained about the high-risk surgery. He said, “There were many risks associated with performing the surgery considering his age. Devising a comprehensive management plan to overcome any possible challenges, we decided on performing the surgery for a quicker and safer recovery avoiding all possible risks. A minimal incision of 5-6 cm instead of 14-15 cm was done to avoid blood loss, and the hip replacement was carried out.”
