Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (CU)_ The Johor state government anticipates RM15 billion in investment in YTL Green Data Center Park in the next decade, particularly due to the region’s increasing need for data centers. According to Johor Chief Minister Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, the 111-hectare, 500-megawatt (MW) green data center park is the biggest data center park in Malaysia at present and is the first facility to be powered by green energy.

According to him, several data center providers are opting to establish their data center companies in less developed regions, and that Johor has the capacity to emerge as a major global data center market. Before the groundbreaking ceremony of the Sea Data Center, the first stage of the YTL Green Data Center Park, Onn Hafiz delivered his speech regarding the significance of the region. He expressed confidence in the region’s recent development status. He said, “We have grown into a robust technology hub and a desired location for digital investments. Our status as the current regional hub for manufacturing, logistics and big data analytics is definitely a plus point”.

YTL Power International Bhd is spending RM1.5 billion on the first phase of YTL Green Data Center Park through its branch YTL Data Center Holdings Pte Ltd. With the Sea Data Center, Sea Ltd. will be YTL Green Data Center Park’s cornerstone tenant. The 72MW project with Tier-III certification is anticipated to be completed in the first quarter of 2024. With the digital economy predicted to generate 22.6% of Malaysia’s GDP by 2025, Johor does not want to miss out on this economic opportunity.

According to Datuk Yeoh Seok Hong, managing director of YTL Power, the ceremony marked a major step forward in their relationship with Sea Ltd. He expressed delight over the initiative. He said, “We are excited to provide world-class, green infrastructure to our partners using our group’s expertise in solar energy, data centers, telecommunications, construction and property development”.
