We live in a world of 30 under 30, “youngest female” and in a space where achievements are glorified more depending on how young the person is. There are high expectations from the youth, and loud celebrations when someone does something great at a young age; but how often do we share the success stories of the wise, who are enriched with experience and have managed the shatter glass ceilings in ages where most turn to retirement.

This is the story of Her Excellency Xiomara Castro, the president of Honduras who swore in at the age of 62. She is the 56th president, yet the first female President of the country. She took up Presidency during a period of economic unsettlement and vouched to pursue social justice and transparency, paving the way to a better future for Honduras. She addressed some heavy topic during her speech, promising the end of drug trafficking gangs, and easing strict abortion laws.

Ms Castro, previously served the nation as first lady during her husband’s tenure in presidential office. Since then, she has been an active political figure, taking on social work and women empowerment regimes. Her husband, Manuel Zelaya was ousted by a coup after which she ran for office twice in the years following his dismissal from a position of power. She emerged victorious in the elections last November and was greeted with much support and positivity from the public.

Her inauguration saw an audience of thousands of people who were present to showcase their appreciation and support. One amongst the thousands was US Vice President Kamala Harris who flew down to Honduras for the occasion.

“My government will not continue the maelstrom of looting that has condemned generations of young people to pay the debt they incurred behind their back,” promised Her Excellency at her inauguration speech, indicating a promising future for the nation.
