London, United Kingdom (CU)_ Suella Braverman, an Indian-origin attorney, was designated as the next Home Secretary of the United Kingdom on Tuesday, replacing Priti Patel, another colleague of Indian origin. The 42-year-old Conservative Party MP for Fareham in south-east England also served as Attorney General in the administration led by Boris Johnson. She was one of the first candidates to enter the race to succeed Johnson as Tory leader and Prime Minister.
Liz Truss, the newly-elected prime minister of the UK, appointed Braverman to the position of home secretary. Braverman is the mother of two kids, and her parents are native of India. Her mother Uma is a Hindu Tamil, and her father Christie Fernandes is a Goan. Her mother moved to the United Kingdom from Mauritius in the 1960s, while her father arrived from Kenya. Braverman discussed her parents in her leadership candidacy launch video in July. She said, “They loved Britain. It gave them hope. It gave them security. This country gave them an opportunity. I think my background is really informed by my approach to politics”.
According to reports, Braverman will be responsible for programs such as the government’s controversial plan to deport some asylum seekers to Rwanda. Braverman, a key member of the Conservatives’ pro-Brexit side, desires a clean break with Europe, including the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). She said, “I want to embed the opportunities of Brexit and tidy up the outstanding issues… and cut taxes”.
However, she was eliminated in the second round of the original voting of Conservative MPs and gave her support to Lizz Truss, who after becoming the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom honored her with one of the highest designations in the UK government. Braverman also spoke about her future boss at Downing Street. She said, “Liz is ready now to be PM. She won’t need to learn on the job. And the job is hard and needs to be done properly. The party has had a difficult six years and stability is urgently and swiftly needed”.
The law graduate from Cambridge University who tied the knot with Rael Braverman in 2018 was famously responsible for bringing about an overdue legal amendment in order to make it possible for her to remain a Cabinet minister while she was away to give birth to the couple’s second child during her maternity leave. Braverman is a Buddhist who frequently attends the London Buddhist Center and took her parliamentary oath on the ‘Dhammapada’ text, containing Lord Buddha’s slogans.
