1. Akita

In the 17th century, this noble and valiant Japanese breed was created to be a fierce hunter with a strong work ethic. Akitas hunted large animals including wild boar, deer, and the ferocious Yezo bear in packs. Only the imperial family and its court were permitted to own them because of how highly valued they were in this position.

2. Alaskan Malamute

The Alaskan Malamute, one of the earliest sledge breeds of the Arctic, was developed to work in packs to transport large loads over great distances at slow rates. The loving, devoted, and lively dog was given the name Mahlemut after the indigenous Inuit tribe that made its home near the Kotzebue Sound in the northwest of Alaska.

3. Bernese Mountain Dog

Don’t be fooled by its stunning beauty and friendly, gentle disposition. The hard-working Bernese Mountain Dog was bred for it. They were prized for their capacity to pull several times their own weight as drafting dogs and were raised to guard farmyards from predators and move cattle.

4. Black Russian Terrier

The enormously strong Black Russian Terrier (BRT) is renowned for its bravery, self-assurance, and wit. A group of scientists and breeders collaborated in the 1930s to create the BRT, a relentless “fence” dog that could assist police Russia’s unending borders and contain captives in Stalin’s prison camps. They did this in a secret location close to Moscow.

5. Cane Corso

It makes fitting that the Cane Corso was created to courageously charge enemy lines at the height of the Roman Empire’s supremacy since the breed’s name roughly translates to “bodyguard dog”. When the Western Empire fell apart in the fifth century, these canines transitioned into more civic occupations like wild boar hunters, cattle drovers, and guardians of farms and pastures in the Italian countryside.

6. Doberman Pinscher

Without a question, the Doberman Pinscher is one of the best guard dogs in the world. These German-bred dogs were designed for police and military duties in the 19th century and have a superb body and high intelligence. Today’s Dobermans are still excellent K-9s, therapy dogs, service dogs, and search and rescue dogs.
