Dentistry enhanced by virtual technology

Australia (Commonwealth Union) – Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to show potential in the health sector with the ability to process information at a speedier rate and detect patterns that may usually be missed. More researchers across the world continue to develop new AI based technology that can complement generally used diagnostic tools and play a significant role in research for new treatments that can instantly analyze data in new methods previously unavailable.

The University of Queensland (UQ) is applying virtual and augmented reality technologies as a significant teaching method for dentistry students, practicing with 3D headsets prior to engaging with real-life patients.

Dr Sobia Zafar from the Digital Dental Team at UQ’s School of Dentistry stated that the technology improved learning had changed the experience of over 400 students in the past 4 years. She further stated that despite having simulation sessions offering a smooth transition to clinics, 87% of students felt the requirement for extra training prior to being given a real-life setting.

“That’s why we decided to embed both virtual and augmented reality technologies into our classes to provide extra, immersive training for students,” Dr Zafar added. “Virtual reality allows students to practice in a safe environment, make mistakes they can rectify, and improve their confidence before entering a clinic to treat real clients.”

With the virtual reality headset, students engage with a 3D holographic display that permits them to see via the skin to explore the human body, with the parts specific to their area of study such as head and neck anatomy. With the augmented reality technology students use their headset and built-in sensors to simulate their movements while moving through a virtual dental clinic and engage with a virtual patient.

Students may also attempt the administration of local anesthesia via a software co-developed by Dr Zafar and Dr Jessica Zachar, giving a new teaching experience.
