Malaysia (Commonwealth Union)_ Boston Scientific Corporation, a global pioneer in medical device technology, has announced the development of its new facilities in Batu Kawan, Penang, Malaysia. The expansion comes with a 110,000-square-foot global distribution center, which is projected to create 300 jobs over the next few years. To support the company’s objective to achieve carbon neutrality in all of its production and major distribution facilities by 2030, the new plant will be partially powered by solar energy and employ an energy-efficient power monitoring system.

In addition, the new plant features a rainwater collection system for internal and external use. Collectively, these activities are part of a plan for the facility to obtain Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold accreditation in the near future. Additionally, over 7 million medical devices, comprising diagnostic and therapeutic technology such as biopsy forceps, balloon angioplasty tools, and laser fibers, have been manufactured in Penang by Boston Scientific during the past five years.

According to Paudie O’Connor, senior vice president for supply chain at Boston Scientific, the expansion strengthens the firm’s end-to-end supply chain expertise in Penang and demonstrates the company’s commitment to providing transformative technology to customers in Asia-Pacific and around the world. “In addition to the investment in the new global distribution center, we continue to invest in fostering a workplace in Penang, where all employees can find opportunities to grow in their careers,” he said.

The new facility is the company’s third global distribution center and its first in Asia. It will ship medical devices throughout Malaysia and the rest of the world. Apart from manufacturing positions, the facility will employ professionals in knowledge-intensive regional supply chain positions, including planning, logistics, customer care, and equipment service and repair. As a result, Penang will play a crucial role in the company’s worldwide supply chain network, functioning as a center for Asia-Pacific markets and contributing to the company’s continuous global business continuity and resilience.
