UK airport security regulations regarding liquids and laptops to be relaxed?

England (Commonwealth Union) _ Due to the introduction of sophisticated 3D scanners, security prohibitions on liquids and computers in hand baggage at airports may be eliminated in the UK by 2024. In two years, the government may implement cutting-edge equipment akin to CT scanners used in hospitals, a source told the BBC, albeit no final decision has been made. Currently, liquids that travelers bring on board can only be in containers that hold up to 100ml, and they must be put in one resealable clear plastic bag as they go through airport security.

Major UK airports have been given until mid-2024 to install more sophisticated scanners, according to a report in The Times. Ministers have also conducted a review, and an official announcement is anticipated in the coming weeks. The main reason for airport security hold-ups is travelers who don’t empty their bags or bring large bottles of liquids and creams. Staff members can zoom in on bag contents and rotate images for review thanks to new technology that has been in use at London Heathrow Airport since 2017.

“We have just begun expanding Terminal 3’s security section, which will have additional computer scanners when finished in the middle of 2024. Up until then, passengers would often encounter the liquid remaining in their baggage. The 100ml liquid restriction might not be applicable once it is in place, according to government authorities at the time.” The Department for Transport mandated that by December 1, 2022, all significant UK airports must have the technology. The equipment was to be implemented over the next few years. However, the epidemic had an impact on that deadline, reducing passenger numbers as a result of travel bans implemented in many parts of the world.
