Levelling up from the ‘broke college student’ stereotype: How to save money when you’re in college

(Commonwealth Union)_How often have we heard “oh man, I am so broke” by a college student, and how often have we accepted the idea that students in college or university are always going to be short of cash. Here’s the thing though, these three simple and easy practices will not just help you level up from the “broke college student” stereotype but will also enable you to save up the bucks while you study.

#Rule 1 – Pick free activities

Why do you need to blow up your cash on extra-curricular and social activities when you have free alternatives that are just as fun? After all, isn’t college life all about the cheap thrills? Ditch your expensive gym membership for a free jog in the morning and choose to watch old reruns on TV while cancelling your Netflix subscription. This makes you more productive and saves up a lot of money which can be useful during emergencies

#Rule 2 – Be transparent with your friends

We understand that it is super cool to offer to pay the coffee bill, or to have pizza parties in the house, or agree to expensive outings and parties to avoid FOMO (fear of missing out). However, this is not sustainable if it’s digging a hole in your purse. It is okay to ditch sometimes and it is totally okay to suggest cheaper alternatives. Most importantly, it is definitely okay to request to split the bill so that the fun does not backfire.

#Rule 3 – Start a side hustle

Be it tutoring, working part-time, babysitting or even owning your small little venture, investing time in a side hustle is the most important way to be productive, and earn a few extra bucks so that you don’t feel guilty every time you splurge. This extra income can be used for emergencies or to assist you in aiding your “broke” problem while you study.

We hope these three tips were insightful and entertaining. Stay tuned for more such tips to manage adulting, the right way!
