England (Commonwealth Union) _ Version 6 of the Industry Code of Practice for Maritime Autonomous Ship Systems is being released by Maritime UK. For individuals that own and operate marine autonomous ship systems, the new guidance is necessary due to the industry’s fast rate of development (MASS). The Code has been utilized by manufacturers, service providers, and others in their day-to-day business even though it is not a formal document. Many manufacturers have stated that customers have used the Code’s requirements as the starting point for contract negotiations.

Version 6 includes updated information on several subjects, such as the MoD Maritime Levels of Automation, MASS Shoreside Interface advice, and staffing and use of Remote Control Centers. The first Code of Practice for the international sector was produced by the Maritime UK Autonomous Systems Regulatory Working Group (MASRWG). The head of Maritime UK, Sarah Kenny, said: “Autonomy is a major factor in the UK’s potential for future growth and combines our sector-wide competence in professional services, cutting-edge research, and top-notch manufacturing and design. Key national initiatives like the National Shipbuilding Strategy and decarbonization are built around autonomy. This Industry Code of Practice provides useful direction on certification, assurance, and safety as the speed of development quickens and autonomy transforms how we live and work.”

MASRWG Chair James Fanshawe said: “MASS development and operations are continuing to solidify their place in the marine environment. The Code of Practice offers the perfect focal point to let the sector advance before the final national and international regulatory frameworks. The framework for several significant modifications, including some new and altered recommendations, is provided by Version 6 of the Code of Practice.” Additionally, Maritime UK is releasing information about the annual MASRWG Conference, which will take place on January 17 and 18, 2023.
