Calling on the diaspora to develop the Maritime India brand

India (Commonwealth Union) _ The Institute of Marine Engineers India, which hosts INMARCO every four years, recently wrapped up INMARCO 2022. It was an exciting mash-up of action-packed conferences, participation from international attendees, policymakers, and top shipping executives, as well as high-level engagement by government authorities, flag administration, and international regulatory bodies like IMO.

Each year’s edition of the event sees notable improvements, leaving its mark on the industry. The Government of India’s high-quality participation in the 2022 event, with the Secretary of Shipping, Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, and the Indian flag administration closely interacting with the industry and listening to its needs and concerns, was the event’s high point. The National Center of Excellence for Green Port’s opening was another event that took place.

Nearly all of the sessions during the three-day event were well-attended by business leaders. Like all recent maritime conferences, this one continued to place a strong emphasis on decarbonization, meeting IMO objectives, and extensive discussions on the creation of an ecosystem for alternative fuels in addition to digitalization and innovation initiatives.

The CEO’s Forum and Policy Makers Forum, in addition to the technical sessions, were the two sessions that stood out and were eagerly anticipated. The regulatory roadmap and the opinions of the industry on market-based policies like the green tax were discussed in these forums. The discussion on the global north, global south, and energy equity were just a few of the fascinating conversations. The necessity of an India voice being heard in the international arena was one of the ideas that reverberated loudly throughout the conference room.

The Indian maritime industry has great potential for expansion, and it would benefit greatly if these Indians living abroad are actively involved, their contributions are recognized, and attempts are made to collaborate with them through outreach initiatives.
