Nauru (COMMENWEALTH UNION) – there are many islands all around the world but Nauru is probably the only one to be known as pleasant island. Now officially known as the Republic of Nauru the country is a small island in Micronesia. Micronesia however is a subregion of Oceania in the Central Pacific Ocean.
Now that the geographics have been stated Nauru is also the third smallest country in the world when measured by area. It is also the second smallest population. The Independence Day of this island nation is to celebrate the islands freedom and independence from colonial rule.
Nauru has a deep history that dates back all the way to ancient times. The first settlers on the island were Polynesian and Micronesians. This settlement was however was about roughly 3000 years ago. It was peaceful for a while until the 18th century.
The 18th century was when European explorers started visiting the island and seeing the potential the island held. The first prominent figure identified was Captain John Fearn who arrived in Nauru in 1798. These were all voyages of curiosity and of course there were settlements but it wasn’t until very late in the 19th century that Nauru was claimed By the German Empire.
Nauru was under the German Empire for some time till the British turned up and the island then went on to be a colony of the British Empire till they got their Independence.
In the year of 1914 Nauru was occupied by the Australian Government. This was the time of World War 1. It was later on that they were administered by the British Phosphate Commission.
Almost a decade later Nauru had become a league of Nations mandate territory administered by The United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. And more than 2 decades later in 1947 Nauru became a United Nations Trust Territory.
Nauru celebrated getting their independence from Australia 31st January 1968. They are now known as the Republic of Nauru. Tis date has been the date the country has accepted and celebrate every year.
The celebrations last the whole day on the island and there are various events and activities planned for the people to take part in. there are parades and national dances, music performances and national cuisine available in the streets. To say it’s a party on the island would not be giving the celebrations the credit it deserves.
