AFRICA ( Commonwealth Union) _ Kagame’s visit takes place as simmering tensions exist between Tanzania’s border neighbours, the DRC and Rwanda. Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan will meet with Rwandan President Paul Kagame during his two-day business visit to Tanzania, which is set to begin on Thursday.

Tanzania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation Stergomena Tax will meet Kagame and his delegation at the Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam.

Kagame’s trip to Tanzania takes place at a time when the two nations enjoy friendly relations and actively cooperate in many areas. The strongest relationships are in commerce and business, but there is promise in many other areas as well. For instance, Tanzania’s exports to Rwanda rose from $60.1 million to $277.8 million in 2021, whereas Rwanda’s exports to Tanzania went from $1.3 million to $2.2 million during the same time period.

President Suluhu Hassan travelled to Rwanda in August 2021 with the intention of fostering closer ties between the two nations. She also saw several pacts being signed during her stay. Later on in the day, the two leaders will meet in the national state house. On Friday, President Kagame will leave Tanzania.

Although Kagame’s visit coincides with simmering tensions between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), both of which share borders with Tanzania, the ministry did not divulge any specific agenda for the presidential meetings.

The rumoured peace negotiations between Ethiopia’s federal government and the rebel Oromo Liberation Army in Tanzania’s Zanzibar archipelago are also anticipated to come up during the meetings. The preliminary peace negotiations, which Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed first announced last Sunday, formally began in Zanzibar on Tuesday, according to a representative for the rebel group quoted by the AP.
